The visit was short but meanwhile Sophie and her mother reestablished their relationship. The purpose of their visit was to initially meet to discuss Grandma Ife’s funeral plans although she is not all that old.

Joseph contacted Sophie’s mother which is how he found out where she was, and several days later Martine shows up in Haiti to finally talk to Sophie. Later it becomes apparent that Sophie and Joseph are having marital issues because she does not even tell him that she was leaving. After that the book picks up two years later back in Haiti while Sophie is visiting with her baby daughter. The last night Martine tested Sophie was the last night they talked. At this point in the book Sophie claims to be in love with the man next door, Joseph whom she marries. Sophie hates that her mother tests her and is so uncomfortable that she takes her own virginity with a kitchen utensil. As Sophie enters womanhood and begins to notice her male audience Martine starts to confirm that her daughter is still a virgin. Throughout the book I noticed there was little mentioned about him rather than the fact he has a relationship with Sophie’s mother.

Later we meet Marc which is Martine’s boyfriend and previous lawyer. Martine seems to be insane and the first serious conversation she has with Sophie is about how she was a rape baby.

Her life in New York turns out to be not the best environment for a child. Sophie’s whole life changed that day when she got dropped off at the airport. From then on Atie seems to distant herself from Sophie probably thinking that if she did, it would be less painful when her niece leaves.

However, Atie one day receives word from her sister Martine that she is ready for Sophie to join her in New York. Sophie and her aunt are very close, perhaps because Atie is the one who has been raising her while her birth mother has been working in New York. Her name is Sophie and when I first meet her character she was living with her aunt Atie in Haiti. The short novel, “ Breath, Eyes, Memory” by Edwidge Danticat is a story about a Haitian girl whom happens to be a product of a rape crime.
